A Look Back at the 2017 Missouri Wing Conference

More than 150 members of the Missouri Wing, Civil Air Patrol, and guests attended the annual Missouri Wing Conference held the weekend of October 20-22, 2017, at the Inn at Grand Glaize in Osage Beach, Missouri.

The Saturday morning general session featured keynote speaker Maj. Gen. Mark Smith, National Commander, and Col. Regina Aye, North Central Region Commander. The guest speaker for the Saturday evening awards banquet was Col. Grace Link, Missouri Air National Guard Chief of Staff. This was the first wing conference attended by Maj. Gen. Smith since being appointed as CAP’s new National Commander.

Special guests throughout the conference weekend included: Lt. Col. Jeffrey Meyers, USAF, CAP-USAF North Central Liaison Region Commander; Mr. Robert Wachholtz, CAP-USAF North Central Liaison Region Assistant Director of Operations; Col. Thomas Theis, North Central Region Vice Commander; Col. Rick Franz, North Central Region Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics; and Lt. Col. Sarah Wildman, North Central Region and Missouri Wing Director of Safety.

Highlights from the conference included:
  • Presentation of a special proclamation from Missouri Governor Greitens' office by State Representative Shane Rodin, himself a Major in the Wing’s Legislative Squadron as well as a former Missouri Wing cadet, to nine members of the Wing who participated in CAP’s Hurricane Harvey response: Col. Gene Hartman, Maj. Jack Gray, Maj. Bobby Redfield, Capt. Stan Edwards, Capt. Carroll "Pete" Pilcher, 1st Lt. Robert Dueck, 2d Lt. Stephen Meinzen, 2d Lt. Sampath Samarasinghe, and Sr. Mbr. Ryan Maichel.
  • The presence of three former Missouri Wing commanders (alphabetically, Cols. Gene Hartman, John Mais, and Bill Winkert, Sr.); as well as former Ohio Wing commander Col. David Winters.
  • Presentation of the General Billy Mitchell Award to siblings 1st Lts. Joshua Reid, Laura Reid, and Lily Reid, Wentzville Composite Squadron.
  • Presentation of the Amelia Earhart Award to C/Capt. Ethan Atwell, Springfield Regional Composite Squadron.
  • Presentation of the Grover Loening Award to Maj. Alan Altis, Group I Headquarters; and Capt. Julianne Dresser, Lee’s Summit Composite Squadron.
  • Presentation of the Paul E. Garber Award to Lt. Col. Tim Willis, Trail of Tears Composite Squadron; and Maj. Max Bradley, Springfield Regional Composite Squadron.
  • Promotions of Sr. Mbr. Melanie Lacey to 1st Lt., Sedalia Cadet Squadron.; 1st Lt. Donald Prevost to Capt., Central Missouri Composite Squadron; and Maj. Sarah Wildman to Lt. Col., North Central Region Headquarters.
  • Recognition of seven squadrons that received the national Quality Cadet Unit Award: (alphabetically) Ft. Leonard Wood Composite Squadron, Laclede County Composite Squadron, Lake Ozark Regional Composite Squadron, Table Rock Lake Composite Squadron, Trail of Tears Composite Squadron, Platte Valley Composite Squadron, and Wentzville Composite Squadron.
  • Recognition of the recent change of command for the Sedalia Cadet Squadron.
  • Chartering of the Missouri Wing’s newest unit, the Excelsior Springs Composite Squadron.
  • Presentation of Commander’s Commendations to: Maj. Lanna Fletcher, Capt. Julianne Dresser, Capt. Stan Edwards, Capt. Katrina Everhart, 1st Lt. Craig Senzig, 1st Lt. Benjamin Weaver, 2d Lt. Kim Wong, SMSgt. Charline O’Neill, C/2d Lt. Andrew Wong, and C/SSgt. Eliora Switzer.
